II. Network Diagrams

case 3b.png

Network diagrams show the relationships among objects. This case displays early examples of node-based network diagrams, in which elements or people are represented by shapes and their relationships by connecting lines. The node-based network diagrams displayed here include kinship diagrams (family trees), timetrees (how species evolve over multiple generations), sociograms (relationships between people in social situations) and semantic networks (relationships between word meanings). Also displayed are early Sankey diagrams, which depict the rate of flow of an element across space or time, or between conceptual categories. In Sankey diagrams bands show the direction of flow and the change in volume (or amount).
